You must have heard about many incidents where technology becomes the lifesaver. But how about a ‘watch’ playing the life-saving job? Here is an instance wherein the Apple Watch Series 5 has saved the life of a 61-year-old Indian man.

iPhone giant’s Apple Watch that comes studded with smart health and fitness features is the champion in many such instances. It is indeed marvellous for a tiny wearable device to alert the wearers about their critical health issues, leading them to diagnose it at the right time.

Apple Watch’s ECG Feature Saves a 61 Year Old Indian Man

In probably the first such reported case in India to date, the electrocardiogram (ECG) feature on Apple Watch has saved the life of a 61-year-old Indian, R. Rajhans, a retired pharmaceutical professional from Indore.

It all began when he decided to check his ECG on the Apple Watch Series 5 after he felt unwell in March this year. His son, Siddharth, gifted this watch to him not knowing that it would prove to be a life-saving wearable device for his father.

“Since Apple allows the ECG function, one can check it on a more regular basis. Twice or thrice, in the middle of the night, my father was getting arrhythmia signals or irregular heartbeats. It’s a critical indicator,” Siddharth said. He shared the findings with his doctor as the result persisted. Further diagnosis exposed Rajhans condition of low ejection fraction that required immediate heart surgery.

Though the surgery was delayed due to COVID-19 restrictions, Rajhans continued to observe his ECG on his Apple Watch. He underwent a Mitral Valve replacement surgery.

Highly impressed by the device that could detect the irregular heart rhythm prior to the Valve failure Echo-cardiograph, Sidharth wrote to Apple CEO, Tim Cook, post the successful surgery.

“Siddharth, thank you for sharing this. I am happy to note that your father received medical attention in time and I hope he’s feeling better now. Our team will connect with you,” Cook responded in a Tweet.

And the best news is that Apple Watch Series 6 is coming with revolutionary wellness and fitness capabilities like the Blood Oxygen feature.
